I live-work in Falmouth, Cornwall, UK. I am a chef-owner of the Waterside restaurant. It is a job that requires many hours of hard work taking me away from the quality of family life.
For some time I have been looking for a second home in the UK for myself and family to relax away from the stressful working environment.
Well this is my story of how I purchased a “to die for” second home on the Costa Calida mainland Spain.
I would never have imagined looking overseas to buy, with language barriers, unfamiliar legal systems, let alone what happens to your deposit when you change it to a different currency and send it down a unfamiliar wire to somewhere who knows who!
Last November when the restaurant was off season, I arranged a family holiday via the Owners Direct website to a villa on the Mar Menor golf resort in the Murcia region of Spain.
We were met at the local airport by Angela in person and taken to our rented villa, 20mins drive away. Angela showed us around, everything was clean, well presented and self-explanatory, nothing was confusing for the simplest of minds!
We had a most memorable holiday so much so that I made arrangements to return as soon after Christmas as possible with the intention to look for a potential purchase of a second home for my family and also as a source of holiday rental income during the times we were unable to use it.
On my return in the New Year Angela from “The House Hunter” met me at the airport, my transfer and accommodation had been arranged, but most importantly so was a portfolio of property exactly to my requested requirements.
During my second stay I was extremely impressed with this portfolio so much so that I came away with no less than 8 properties on my wanted list. Obviously there was a favorite it needed some repairs and updating and was a little over my budget.
I meet with a local solicitors office, they all spoke perfect English, and in fact one of the legal secretaries was from the Midlands! We arranged power of attorney through the local notary, magistrate, this enabled us to sign the relevant documents by e-mail.
Soon after my return to the UK, Angela from The House Hunter called me with the good news that was life changing for me and my family.
In a nutshell The House Hunter had negotiated through the vendors estate agent an amazing reduction on the sale price of my family´s favorite choice, enough reduction to achieve all the necessary repairs and updating to make it into our happy holiday home suitable for rental and well within our budget.
The House Hunter´s UK offices arranged an initial introduction to Moneycorp-Barclays Bank London. A great relief as they explained exactly how our deposit was changed into euros and sent to our solicitors in Spain.
They also introduced us to Bank Sabadell, who arranged our Spanish mortgage, bank account to pay the utilities, etc. They also arranged comprehensive home insurance.
The same day we completed, bearing in mind I was hard at work in my kitchen in Falmouth UK, The House Hunter was at our property with a locksmith to renew all the final exits and were arranging through known contractors the repairs and updating we had agreed and that were well within our budget.
Our family felt so safe and secure with the company that we commissioned them to redesign the entire property, from choosing our bespoke new kitchen right through to curtains and linen.
We have just returned from Los Alcazares and to be honest we were a little apprehensive about seeing our new look home. Amazement does not convey enough of how we felt upon arrival. It’s simply stunning.
We left a shabby old fashioned house and returned to a boutique style villa. We simply cried. The attention to detail was utterly outstanding, everything had been thought through. There was even matching teddies on the kid’s beds and a collection of family friendly movies.
Our intention was always to rent our villa in high season, the sister company The House Manager launched our advert online just last week and I’m astounded to say we have had 6 bookings in the first 5 days.
Our total budget for buying and refurbishment was £140,000. I can now tell you that I own a stunning semi-detached villa with private heated pool that I am now renting out at £850 per week!!!
My family’s dreams have come true and our return on investment is simply staggering. Our journey from first viewing to final completion has been so simple thanks to Angela and her team, we really can’t thank them enough. Well in fact we are as we have already asked The House Hunter to find us another property!
